Prince Johnson and his presidental Bid ----2011---

In this short article, I will be making the most effort to take a closer look at how the political rain is falling these days in Liberia as it relates to the presidential bid of General/senator Prince Y. Johnson.

In recent times, on most of our community intellectual domains, there has popped up the issue of Prince Johnson and his presidential bid in the up coming General elections in Liberia. Usually I will ,  try to sit and watch our intellectual pitbow tearing off the flesh of the issue at hand before I go in to identified the color of the bone in that particular issue. However, it appears as though the issue of Prince Johnson is hard for the big dogs to take a clean bit of. So, it surfaces and people make attempts on it but back off immediately. I wonder why?

Since the intellectual powers amongst us are unable to tear this one apart maybe because of its difficulty , let me try identifying the color of the bone there in. First of all, before I go further, I want to say that I recognized Liberia as a democratic country with a democratic constitution which is the organic law of the Land. I also want to recognize Senator Johnson as a Liberian who has equal rights as all Liberians do under the law.

I set the premise above because in recent time, some Liberians have tried to convinced the public that prince Johnson shouldn't contest for a presidential position in Liberia. However, if any one among us has that notion, I will say that he/she must revise it now. Liberia's constitution like all other democratic constitutions states that all citizens that are eligible to vote and be voted for, have the right to do so without any unlawful interferences. Therefore, as law abiding citizens we need not to stand in the way of the law in this direction. I believe that if we do, we will not only be violating the law but also will be doing injustice to the brother after watching Kromah, konneh, Boley, Taylor and other war lords contest the same position every election season in Liberia since the civil war came to an end. After saying that, let me quickly began to dissect the political landscape as it relates to  his capability to galvanize votes in Liberia as a whole. In this presentation, I will look at Mr. Johnson as two characters in one individual.

The character dichotomy as I see it, will in my opinion, stand as 1) A MILITARY GENERAL 2) A POLITICAL SENATOR.

Prince as a General: Without attempting to violate the law, I can only say that Prince as a general in the executive mansion is not what we want to encourage as of now. Watching what unfolded during the war in Liberia and what I have seen military leaders like Doe, Taylor, Musa Kamara of guinea, Amin of Uganda etc  do, I will think that prince Johnson shouldn’t at all be mandated by the Liberian electorates for any reasons to serve as a president for a day.

I see the democratic process in Liberia as a chick with out a mother. When the mother of a chick died before the egg hatches’, the survival of that chick is completely in the hands of the farmer and his family. In the case of Liberia embryonic democracy, Prince Johnson without a proper training can’t play the part of a farmer who is entrusted with its live. This is because Prince Johnson as a military General is used to ordering People to take action without expecting them to asking any questions. In a young democracy such as ours, the president is not the law or its interpreter but the first employee of the executive branch of the government. Military Generals shoots and kills people who are accused of stealing money or some things important but under democracy, the law prosecutes criminals  and those who stand accused of corruption and other wrong doings and  again, not the president. Therefore I strongly believe that if General Johnson maintains his military character, he will not be good a steward for our young democracy.

Prince Johnson as a politician:  During the last General election in Liberia, the once general and leader of the Independent National patriotic Front of Liberia(INPFL), emerged in Liberia out of self imposed exile and announced that he will contest a senatorial position in his home county of Nimba. At first, political pundits  predicted that he will not win a seat but when the final bell ranged, he came out with a whopping 70% of the total votes in the second populated and largest county in Liberia, (Nimba) making him the only senator in our country history to obtained that record after a feistiest contested election. This victory left many people asking as to what the electorates of Liberia want. What characters do they desire of a leader? is it a strong will person? or did they see a leader in Mr. Johnson that has been transformed from a militant to a politician who is going to respect the rules of law and allow the judicious system to prevail according to it purpose? To answer some of these questions, some  pundits including me, have been keeping a closer eye on Senator Johnson own leadership dispensation of position under his charge.

From my observation of the Nimba County Senator and talking to him on couple of occasions, I am coming to a perfect conclusion that he has transformed from a complete militant to a respectful politician at least fifty percent. I believe that with such character, he is now qualify to contest the presidency and complete the training for the practices of leadership of a president in Liberia, since historically military leaders who transformed and adapt the character of political leaders have done well with leadership in the past and in the process, acquired favor from their flowers. However, if Senator Johnson is at all not playing "political leader" but is ready to be one, than he needs to project that into his day to day activity such as respecting the views of people who disagree with him in the function of his duties.
My observation of the senator which is very objective is that, he is still trying to balance between the characters of a consultative leader who respect the opinion of his followers even when there is a disagreement and that of a leader who will only want to see his followers do what he wants them to do. Looking at his leadership in the Nimba legislative caucus where he serves as chairman, one can deduce that he had not done enough as the leader to keep the caucus functional for the betterment of its constituent. It is reported that he is not willing to accept and respect any opposing view to his. As a result, he and six of Nimba county seven representatives have no good relationship.  However, political historians believes that it is possible that he can completely turn around because of the office he wants to occupy.  I too think so. I think that he is capable of completing the circle of change if he networks with the right kind of people and not any kind of politician “want to be.”

My next post will cover Prince johnsn's Capability to win the 2011 election and why?

Where are the Blue Dog Democrats?

Hay! I am just curious about the Blue Dog Democrats that emerged during the discussion of the Health care bill in the US congress. why did the color of the dogs turn blue anyways? do you think it is because there is a black Dog in the white house or because those blue ones don't want the black dog's program to succeed?

I personally think that those dogs that turn their colors to blue are the ones who were not expecting the black dog to win the election. As a result, they are probably confused and are caught between the camp of the red dogs and the camp of the black dog.

I have not kept dogs in my house before but I had few dogs back in Africa when I was about eight years old. The only way a dog's color will change is when it is still a poppy and in a growing stage. However, when a dog's color changes at older age, it means that, that dog is sick or is about to die. During this election season, I still hears the Black dog barking and fighting very strongly to keep the Democratic camp up, while apparently, the blue dogs are been defeated in various primaries by Tea party activates. Lets keep our eyes and ears open for how it all going to play out but I think the result is not good for the democrats.
